In the art studio, much of what we do is framed by the 8 Studio Habits of Mind: Develop Craft, Engage and Persist, Envision, Express, Observe, Stretch & Explore, Reflect and Understand the Art World. (see http://pzweb.harvard.edu/research/StudioThink/StudioThinkEight.htm )
Today a group of eighth grade collage artists were busily scouring through magazines when they came across a full-page portrait – which led to the human collage pictured here.
Which studio habit did they employ? Is it Observe: learning to look closely to see things that otherwise might not be seen? Or maybe it is Stretch and Explore: Taking creative risks, exploring, playing with ideas, discovering? It is interesting to examine artistic endeavor through this lens of studio thinking habits of mind – artistic thinking about thinking – to better understand “the work of the artist.”
